Toddlers sweaters-Are buttons safe?
My mom asked me to make sweater/jackets for my 3 nephews. The twins are turning 3 next month. And the other boy is 5.

I haven't chosen any patterns yet. But I'm wondering about buttons. I know they would be okay for the larger child. But are buttons safe on clothes for 3 year olds?

I think so as long as they are on securely. If you are really concerned or you know the kid is a chewer then you could do snap tape or ties.

I don't know if they chew. I haven't seen them since they were babies cause they live on the East coast, & I'm on the West one. It has been a long time since I knit for kids. Other that baby layettes, which don't use buttons anyway. So I'm pretty clueless about what age is okay for buttons.

Maybe I'll just adapt the patterns for zippers.

The majority of 3 yr olds are beyond chewing on things. That's usually done by kids around a year to maybe 2yrs. Three year olds have more attention span and skills now that keep them busy plus they are at the age you can actually talk to them. Personally I wouldn't worry about it, but go with what you feel comfortable with.

Thanks Jan. If buttons are okay, it gives me more pattern choices. Plus, I don't have to hunt for separating zippers in a short length.

Go ahead and use the buttons; ready made clothes for that age have them.

Someone told me that raglans fit the child longer because of the shoulder slope. I figure I'll do a folded up cuff on the sleeves. Maybe in garter stitch.

I've been playing around with color block patterns. Have settled on a bottom up raglan. I need to adapt the pattern to add a hoodie. Should be easy.

It is good that these are small. But the time I settle on a pattern, I'll need to be quick on the knitting.

Thanks for the help on the buttons. Like I said, I don't know when they are safe for kids. But if commercial garments have buttons, it should be okay.
