circular knitting

first time on circular needles going round. Did several rows only to find out the work was twisted. What did I do wrong and how do I avoid it in the future?

Your yarn was twisted when you joined the yarn to make the circle. When circular knitting, once I have all the stitches casted on, I line up the yarn by lining up the top of the stitches (the loops on the needle) on the outside of the circle and the bottom of the stitches on the inside of the circle. Once it's all lined up, join the yarn and you should be good to go!

I feel your pain--this is so easy to do!

After casting on but *before* joining your round, lay your needle flat on the table and flatten out all the cast on stitches. Make sure they all lie toward the center of the loop of your needle. Now pick up the needle and join the round, being careful not to twist either end before they are joined. (After joining you can check again, too, if you like, before getting very far in.)

What the others said - be careful when you join to do the first round. Then also look at the stitches before you start the second round because the join is just a single strand and the whole first round can get twisted too. You don't need to undo it, just straighten it out and begin the next round.
