I wondered if you might have been doing a kfb, k6 4 times across your 32sts. This would have left you with 4 stitches. The repeat is to kfb, k6, kfb again. You repeat that whole bit inside the brackets, so you end up with 2 knit front backs next to each other, like this:
Kfb, k6, kfb, kfb, k6, kfb, kfb, k6, kfb, kfb, k6, kfb. That uses up all of the stitches and gives you 8 increases as it calls for.
I can see myself making a misread like this and being stumped because it didn't work.
