What is 1x1 rib stitch?

I am finishing a child's dress and the color directions say: "Work in 1x1 rib for 3 rows . . ." I presume it means seed stitch, but hat to proceed if that is not correct.

NOT seed stitch. seed stitch is not a rib.

1 x 1 rib is k1, p1 repeated across your row. (normally worked on an even number of stitches.
on the other side you work the stitches as they present, so it would be p1, k1.

This makes ribs, one stitch wide.

Ribbing is not seed stitch. While you do k1 p1 on the first row for both rib and seed st, the second row determines which it is. For seed st, you would knit the purl sts and purl the knit sts as they face you (not what you did to them on the row before) and for ribbing you knit the knit sts and purl the purl sts.

Duh! I simply typed "1x1 rib stitch" into AOL search and was directed to a "How to" site. It is simply a K1 P1 rib. I have been knitting for 60 years and have never heard it referred to that way. It's great to learn something new. Perhaps this is a new international term? Or due to the fact I have not used any new patterns in a long time.

I've used the term for years and seen others do that. Also 2x2 rib, 3x2, etc.
