Grafting
Hi. I am relatively new to knitting. My older sister is going away to Sweden and I am knitting a cute hat for her. The problem is, I have finished the brim and it says to graft the two sides. I know how to graft a simple stockinette stitch but here I have 2 knits, 2 purls, 9 knits, 2 purls and 2 knits. I can't graft the 2 purls. Can you help me please?

There's a video on Kitchener stitch on the Tips page, that shows purls I think, or you might find one on You tube. You could also do a 3 needle BO; this is done on the WS and can be done in all knits, it doesn't show on the WS and won't disturb the knit and purl pattern.

This PDF shows you reverse stockinette grafting (purls) as well as regular. I bookmarked it for easy reference!

Thanks for the link Jan. I tried it but when I have knits near purls it doesn't look good. I tried to add the pettern link before, but it wouldn't let me. I will just include the part of the pattern that needs grafting: "Using straight needles or two double-pointed needles, CO 17 sts with a provisional cast on. Work 16[17, 18] repetitions of Braided Cable pattern, ending final repetition on row 7 of pattern. Do not bind off. Unravel provisional cast on and graft [kitchener stitch] the two ends of the band together."

Try the 3 needle BO, shown on the Tips page under Finishing. Undo the provisional CO and put the sts on a needle, put the two ends together with the RSs facing in and BO.

Hello, there. So glad to learn that you are making the same hat as I. The pattern is from Knitty and I just finished the braided cable, and my first attempt at Kitchener stitch. It worked fine until the end when I was left with only one stitch on each needle. Didn't know what to do. Saw a post from jo29 in which she says to insert the needle kw into the stitch on the front needle and slip it off; then insert the needle pw into the stitch on the back needle and slip it off. I don't know if this helps you any, but I will probably try it. Good luck with your hat. Let me know how it turns out. I'm using Lambs Pride in Creme.

Here are the directions from Amy at KH for grafting k2p2 rib. I'm sure you can adapt it to different multiples. Good luck with it!
