I keep track of where I am in the pattern by simply writing down row numbers and making a mark when I finish that row. When done with that section I go back and write on the pattern what changes I made, if any, and how many rows I did for what section. That way if I use the pattern again I know what I did previously. It may be more tedious, but it works for me. Also helps when I have to take the project in to my LYS for help when I get stuck as they have a better idea of where I am in the pattern.
