A lot of a yarns cost is based on where the fiber came from and how it was processed. As you learn you'll see that not all acrylics are created equal. Some are processed differently, too. Same thing with wool. Some animal fiber is soft and luxurious and some is is scratchy. Once washed it often softens up the yarn nicely.
