A scarf are probably one of the most popular knitting project. They are typically straight forward to knit and don't require seaming or careful attention to gauge. This makes them ideal first projects for beginning knitters. Below, you will find dozens for free knit scarf patterns, from simple stitch patterns to complex cable designs.
Felted Piano Scarf
Beginner/Intermediate. This pretty scarf has a one edge in a solid color; the other edige is made in short rows so it is striped and ruffled.
Gauge: 4.0 stitches per inch or 16.0 stitches per 4 inches.

Leaves and Waves Scarf
Intermediate/Advanced.
Gauge: 3.0 stitches per inch or 12.0 stitches per 4 inches.

Diamond Edge Moebius Scarf
Intermediate.
Gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch or 18.0 stitches per 4 inches.

Beginner. Three different types of yarn give this scarf "great depth" according to Kelly.

Elongated Stitch Scarf
Beginner. Directions:6 rows of garter stitch, 1 row of elongated stitch. Repeat. Add fringe.Elongated stitch: insert needle as if to knit. Wrap yarn 4 or 5 times around needle. Pull all wraps through stitch. On next round, knit just the front loop, letting wraps fall off of needle.
