Making a hat on this kind of needle is a great first project. You can also knit flat with these needles, and completely forego the usual straight needles for projects like scarves.
About Circulars: Circular needles are preferred by many knitters over straight needles because they’re easier on the wrists. With straight needles you’re lifting the weight of the whole project at the end of a long shaft, making the wrists work very hard. A circular needle with a flexible cable (such as the Denise Interchangeable Needles, available in the knittinghelp.com/shop) will be easier on the wrist, as well as on the wallet.
