Identifying Knit and Purl Stitches on the Needle

More Getting Started Videos

In knitting there are typically two types of stitches: Knit Stitches and Purl Stitches. Beginning Knitters may have trouble distinguishing between the stitches as they appear on the needle. If you imagine that the loop on the needle is a person’s head and the yarn that makes up the stitch is a scarf draped over their neck, then a knit stitch looks like how the scarf would appear from the front, hanging down around their neck. Whereas, a purl stitch looks like how the scarf would look when view from behind a person’s head, draped over their neck. Just remember this visual analogy and you’ll never be at a loss when trying to distinquish between knit and purl stitches.
