This bind off method binds off two pieces of knitting at the same time, joining them in a visible, neat seam. It is commonly used for binding off the front and back of a sweater at the shoulders. The rigid shoulder seam that it creates won’t sag down with the weight of the sleeve, and is therefore often preferred over the otherwise more discreet Kitchener Stitch.
