Free Knitting Patterns: Stitch Patterns
Stitch patterns are not really knitting patterns in and of themselves. Rather they are combinations of stitches that can lend visual appeal to nearly any knitted object, from scarves to sweaters. Stitch patterns can be influence by the type of yarn used and the number of plys. Some yarns will make a texture stitch pattern pop, while another yarn might make for a more subtle appearance.
Ridge Stitch Square
Beginner/Intermediate. The Ridge Stitch Square creates a ridged columns with a combination of knit and purl stitches.
Zipper Rib Square
Beginner/Intermediate. The Zipper Rib Square is a variation on ribbing that resembles the vertical teeth of open zippers.
Waffle Rib Square
Beginner/Intermediate. The Waffle Rib Square is is a reversible variation on ribbing.
Mini Dots Square
Beginner/Intermediate. This stitch pattern creates seed stitch stripes for a fun texture.
Purled Ladder Square
Beginner/Intermediate. This stitch pattern creates a lightly textured alternating grid.
Garter Stripes Square
Beginner/Intermediate. Alternate between stockinette and reverse garter stitch to mimic stripes.
Ribs and Boxes Square
Beginner/Intermediate. Two stitch patterns combine to create a texture that looks interesting on both sides
Garter Ridge Square
Beginner/Intermediate. This pattern combines knits and purls to make a textured grid.

Star Stitch
Beginner. The color effect in this beautiful sample is a result of using variegated yarn, and having it "pool."
